Brief it. Ride it. Debrief it.

The way fighter pilots plan and review every flight, built for every jumper round.

Snap the course map at the in-gate, draw your track and strides right on the photo, and record a 30-second voice brief to replay before you go in. After the round, debrief fence by fence. Over time, Saddlebrief shows your patterns.

The method

Every flight gets a brief and a debrief. Your rounds should too.

In fighter aviation, nobody straps in without a brief, and nobody walks away without a debrief. The brief makes the plan clear before the pressure starts. The debrief turns what happened into one thing to keep and one thing to fix. It's a simple loop, and it works the same way in the show ring.

1

Brief it

  • Photo of the course map, with your track drawn on it
  • Key lines and strides, plus a plan B
  • A 3-item in-gate routine
  • A one-tap nerves check
  • A voice brief you can replay
  • Arena photos of the real ring to look back at later in the barn
2

Ride it

  • Chair-fly mode: the map full screen and your voice brief playing
  • Say the course with your eyes closed, then start from fence 5
  • Run your in-gate routine and go
3

Debrief it

  • Planned vs. what happened, fence by fence
  • Tap fault tags: rail, refusal, rollback, distance, rider error
  • One keep, one fix
  • Add your round video and watch it back right next to your notes
  • Optional voice debrief while it's fresh
Over time

📊
Your most common faults. Which tags keep showing up, and at which kinds of fences.
🔄
What goes with what. For example, “most of your rails come at fences you tagged rollback.”
💓
Nerves vs. faults. Does a high nerves check before the round actually show up in your score?

Who built it

Built by a fighter pilot and instructor who turned into a show jumper

Brian Wood is an Air Force fighter pilot, a current Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) instructor, an airline pilot, and a CFII focused on human performance psychology. He holds a BS in Human Factors Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy and a Master's in Aviation from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Saddlebrief takes the brief and debrief habits pilots use under evaluation and puts them in a free tool for jumper rounds. More about Brian
